Best Practices to Rolling A Joint

Perhaps one of the best tricks to know within the cannabis community is to be able to roll your own joint. This can be a hard thing for many people with no experience rolling joints. Nonetheless, you can learn if you are willing to practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more, you certainly can become a doobie rolling master in no time at all.

Practical tips for rolling a good joint

  • Start small

You should aim to craft a smokeable doobie before you aim to roll a fattie. Ha, in all seriousness, it is far easier to twist up a cannabis joint if there is less weed in it, rather than it bursting through the sides and seams of the joint.

  • Does not need to be perfect

Especially when you start, remember if it smokes, it is good enough! Remember as well, it is always best to practice first. When I first learned how to roll a joint, I sat down with a book of papers for $2 and a jar of weed. I kept going at it until I had rolled one that looked smokeable and I let it rip! I may have wasted half that book of papers but now I can roll a beautiful joint in less than 15 seconds, assuming the weed is not too sticky.

  • Plan for the weed to move

While you are rolling the joint, you will inevitably shift the cannabis within the paper from the original position it was in. To compensate for this movement, it is a great practice to create two “camel humps” of weed within the joint and leave some space on the edge of the paper before those mounds start. Then pinch the top of the “camel humps” of cannabis within your joint and roll it down. The weed will shift but it will do so that it ends up with a more even amount of cannabis throughout the joint.

  • Use your resources!

There is no shame in using a joint roller to twist up the perfect doobie. Usually, when using one, you will notice a smaller joint will work better than stuffing the roller 100% full to the brim. This can be another great way to start practicing rolling a joint. Simply try once or twice with your hands before you roll up with the roller and after no time at all, you will be a doobie master.

What’s the proper way to pack a bowl?

I have watched my folks on more than one occasion try to pack a bowl by taking a small nugget and shoving it into a pipe. This is, technically, a workable method but it could be far more effective. Taking the time to pack a bowl properly will do two important things. First, it will be a more effective way to smoke cannabis since it will burn more even when ground up in a bowl. Second, it should help your medical marijuana last a bit longer by not wasting in with unburnt parts of a bowl. The other great aspect of packing a bowl versus sticking a full nugget of ganja into it is that it should help keep the pipe clean longer. If you are not finishing your bowls, this will eventually clog the pipe and lead to a dirty cleaning situation. When in doubt, use a grinder!

The surface area of ground-up cannabis compared to a nugget of weed is what truly makes the difference. When you break down the cannabis from the nugget form you get a nice mixture of the different parts of the nugget, as shown in the photo above. This allows the plant matter to burn more evenly than it would if it was still stuck onto the stem. With that said, remember to always spend a few moments grinding your cannabis with a  grinder or by hand for the best consumption experience.

Save your Vaporized Cannabis

One of the most enjoyable aspects of vaporizing your cannabis can be saving the used flower for cooking or other products later. You can truly get the full effectiveness of the cannabis plant when vaporized. First, it will be a more efficient means of consuming cannabis which means more medication gram for gram compared to combusting it in a pipe. Furthermore, after you vaporize the flower, it can be used for lotions, oils, or as a cooking ingredient. Even though it has been vaporized, the vaped flower will still have some cannabinoids left and these are perfect for a simple crock-pot and butter extraction method. It is certainly hard to tell the dosage of these products though and if you decide to go the edible route, you should do so with caution.

Prepare for the Munchies

There are a great variety of snacks which can pack a healthy punch into your munchies craving. These include veggies, fruits, and even sometimes splurging with something sweet or salty such as a candy bar or some chips. Though the latter certainly is not healthy, we feel sometimes you do have to splurge a little in life. With that in mind, it is great to bring something healthy along especially with the fact that your diet can play an important part in your overall health and wellness. With that said, a few personal favorite snacks include carrots or celery paired with peanut butter. Another great one is anything like a protein bar, granola bar, or anything in the fruit category are also go tos for when the munchies strike.

All and all, remember there are certain tricks to make your cannabis experience more enjoyable and more importantly, more efficient. Remember to practice rolling your joints, you’ll be a professional in no time! Further, you should always grind up your cannabis before trying to burn it. This is true with vaporizers as well and remembers it is all about surface area. Sometimes, less is more.

Also, remember you can enjoy your vaporized cannabis longer than just when you are actually vaping it. It’s a great ingredient to a variety of recipes. Finally, perhaps most importantly, remember to bring some healthy munchies with you for your enjoyment while you consume cannabis.
